5 Trends We Noticed at Boutique Design New York
Always on the cutting edge of fashion and design, we attended the Boutique Design event in New York this past November. In addition to having our own display area showcasing the latest in luxury vinyl flooring trends, we also explored and took note of the trends in displays from various other interior design vendors and furnishing supply companies.
Here’s what we found:
Gold and Black
The theme of gold and black was a trend throughout BDNY—it was popular in lighting, bathroom fixtures and accessories. A classy and chic palette, we noticed the color pairing trend across several displays, including this wall tile look at the Indoteak Design display:
We also saw a lot of blacks and golds in the bathroom fixtures displayed at the JACLO display area:
The Martha Sturdy accent display was also filled with rich and warm gold and black tones:
Furniture Wood Grain
We have discussed this style before, and it remains a trend still: wood grain surface looks in furniture design, even in furniture that is not made entirely of wood. The flooring trend takeaway is a simple and light flooring design that subtly compliments and allows the furniture to take the spotlight.
Stacy Garcia showed this wood grain look in several furniture pieces in their display area:
The showcase of From the Source also featured a variety of furniture and surfaces with a natural unfinished wood grain look:
JIS Contract Furniture joined this trend, showing plenty of wood grain in their display, notably in the dual-toned wooden bedframe:
Great Lighting Fixture
A great lighting fixture is a must-have. This often-overlooked feature of a room is a fantastic opportunity to make a statement. We noticed this trend was in the Arteriors display, which showcased a number of stunning statement lighting fixtures:
Another display with many beautiful statement lighting fixtures was in the Trend and Worlds Away displays:

Wall Coverings
Whether using vinyl flooring or a cool printed paper or tile, wall coverings are in. This ties into flooring trends, not only because luxury vinyl flooring is used as a wall covering, but also because a wall with a more distinct pattern needs a complimentary flooring design. This can be a subtle design that allows the wall covering to stand out, such as the bold wall covering design in this Innovations display:
Wolf Gordon also had some bright and vibrant fabrics on display that are used for wall coverings, as well as upholstery and other fabric-clad accessories and accents.
Bold Patterns
Bold patterns, especially geometric patterns, are still of interest. We outlined this in a previous post on flooring trends, and it’s clearly a trend that is still going strong. We saw these patterns at BDNY in pillows, fabrics and furniture coverings, not only the Wolf Gordon display shown above, but also in the Janus et Cie and Citta displays:
Design Trend Bonus: Bathroom Accessories
One more fun trend at BDNY were really bold bathroom accessories, as shown here in this Via Motif setup:
This just goes to show that any element of your interior can be an opportunity for a great design decision.
